British Jets Intercept Russian Bomber Over North Atlantic

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

Two Royal Air Force jets have intercepted a Russian bomber over the North Atlantic.

"RAF Typhoons from Numbers 3(F) and XI Squadrons launched to shadow a Russian Bear-H aircraft over the North Atlantic Ocean on Friday 17 August 2007," the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

In a separate incident, the Reuters news agency reported Wednesday that a Russian fighter jet violated Georgian airspace by at least 3 miles. Russia quickly denied the claim made by Georgia's Foreign Ministry.

It was the first time the Eurofighter has been scrambled on a genuine alert since it took over defense of Britain's airspace in June.

Putin: Russia Will Be World's Largest Military Aircraft Maker

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday he is determined to make Russia the world’s leading producer of military aircraft, the Guardian reports.

Putin said Russian-made aircraft would be a priority after decades of taking a back seat to the West.

"Russia has a very important goal, which is to retain leadership in the production of military equipment," said Putin, who made his comments during Russia’s air show.

The announcement comes amid tense relationships with the West and just a week after he said long-range missions were to resume, with patrols flying over the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic for the first time since 1992. The strategic bomber aircraft are capable of hitting the United States with a nuclear weapon.

Russian officials hinted production of Tu-160 and Tu-95 strategic nuclear bombers could be resuming soon since the aircraft are flying "combat missions" and would be used as a "means of strategic deterrence," presidential aide Alexander Burutin told Interfax.

Putin also said Russia would resume the large-scale manufacture of civilian planes.

Welcome back to what I believe is the start of the newest revision of the cold war. This will undoubtedly start a new possibly profitable era for Russia again and revive the old tensions of the past with the former USSR once again. They obviously missed the major nuclear threat agains them from the US. Well the game is back in effect. When will they ever learn? Have the not noticed that their financial situation is not the best? Perhaps that is thier motivation. Maybe they just have a "Come kick our ass" fetish? I feel that the US is obliged to help them out with that!

You've hit the nail on the head there that's for sure. Maybe they forgot that when they simply do not have the economy to compete with the US on a military basis.

Sure they have oil money right now, but how fast would that dry up if the US went to war with them?
